@JNat it is about a (shut-in) boy turned unwilling into a girl by his sister who gives him a drug. If we read thru the lines in the first chapter the sister is doing this partially as an experiment (bad) and part to "reform him" (very weird way to do so, but...it is a fantasy story).

But ... then? What would the story actually represent?

It is a "male stereotypes are bad, there is nothing wrong if you like to chill out with friends" thing? If so... it is pretty bad that he has to "be" a girl to do "things girls do"

It is a "actually maybe I am trans?" thing/allegory? Even worse then since at that point it would not be his choice but a thing the (bastard) sister pushed on him

I... don't get it.

the lack of consent in participating in the sister's experiment is definitely problematic from my point of view

that being said, I honestly dunno if there is a point the author wanted to make

I see transness in it, but that might be the lens I'm looking at it through moreso than what they wanted to convey

you can always watch it to form your own view of it

from what I see from my own rating of it, both storyline and character development etc., I only rated it 5/10. Which means I saw issues with the premise and the plot development, as well as the character development itself. From memory, that will have been related to the lack of consent re: the experiment; the fact that the main character got turned into a much younger age; and how both of these make it, to your point, much harder to understand what the point being made is

aesthetically it was neat, as was the voice acting etc.; not something I'd rewatch, but something I enjoyed (7.5/10 in personal enjoyment/rewatch factor, etc.)

so yeah, it explored themes I was interested in, but not in the way I'd have appreciated on some aspects. But, again, I felt like it got gradually better...?

If it is three, I would hate it because without a reason the sister comes out really bad with her "let's use my bro as a guniea pig" part. I would struggle to like her and thus it would ruing my enjoyment since she is a main char.

If it is two... it could work. But the things would need to be shorter.

As far as I know the show ends on a very specific choice from the main character during a trip. I won't spoil it here but you should know what I am talking about.

the main thing with regards to character growth is more related to change in and of itself in a way, even if the way they decided to materialize change has the previously identified issues. At least I read it that way in part.

Then it should get to "boy doing girly stuff" and getting bullied because of that, to then go to a final message of "actually... there is no girly stuff. Do what you want no what people expect of you". That would be great. Instead... it seems stuck into the usual "anime Status quo" so it will end with Mahiro still a girl and no closure to that choice.

If the show is instead an allegory on transitioning to a new identity.... the "drug without consent" premise is plain horrible and alone ruins any hope for the show.

Nagatoro has its cute moments, but all is IMHO ruin by the author never getting Nagatoro outside the "bully-dere" frame.

She has scenes where you can see she cares... but she is back to bully girl troope in the next scene.

It is like Gōda Takeshi "Jaian" in Doraemon. A bully, but sometime the "hear of gold" behind the facade shows out. Only to return to a bully next episode.

But Doraemon is a no-arc plot show, each episode has to be self standing, characters are frozen without any evolution.

It doesn't work for a slice of life-romance show.

from a quick search, it looks like the author was interested in creating a gender bending anime, especially after watching Kimi no Na Wa

so maybe there were no deeper intentions

which is why it is flawed if you try to look at it from those perspectives

again, didn't read the manga, but it's always possible some of those details that build on those narratives might've been introduced by other staff writers with other intentions, etc.

@JNat Yep, but then the issue is that the plot goes to make a point that "Girl is better" (where girl is actually less about gender and more about social standards/behavior. Basically a "girls aren't expected to be toxic/alpha" thing)

First episode of the Gen 4 Celestia sends Twily to Ponyville. At first Twily is focused on stopping Nightmare Moon return, then she makes friends with other girls there and decide to stay.

She is a girl, other main characters are girls (it was a "girl show" after all), theme is friendship, she was a shut-in before, she discovers how it feels to have friends etc etc etc.

Now, suppose in the first episode we are greeted by a MALE Twilight that basically behaves like Sheldon Cooper.

She gets turned to a female and only after that she makes friends with other females.

You... have to admit it would come out odd.

Was turning female required to "grown outside" being a shut-in? Did the character had to change gender to learn friendship?

Probably overthinking it...

I also watched it as it was coming out, and I always find that watching anime like that makes for a different experience than watching it once it's all come out. The forced one-week space between any two episodes may contribute to overlooking some issues, to miss continuity on some points, etc. Also it means I watched it 2 years ago, so my memory could be fuzzy on some points.

I apparently didn't keep notes about what I liked and disliked, as I started doing some time after that
